Grading Redskins’ selection of Montez Sweat in first round

The Washington Redskins traded with the Indianapolis Colts to acquire the No. 26 pick in the NFL Draft, where they selected Montez Sweat, an edge rusher out of Mississippi State.

Draft Grade: A

The Redskins traded their No. 46 pick and a second-round pick in 2020 for the opportunity to draft Sweat. It may be a lot of capital to give up, but Washington is in ‘Win-Now’ mode, and their selections are backing that up.

With the loss of Preston Smith this off-season, the Redskins had a hole to fill on the defensive line, and they believe Sweat can be a difference maker. The fact that Sweat had dropped to the mid-’20s was surprising to many, so Washington took a risk and moved up to get him.
