Grading Notre Dame's performance vs. Temple

Nov. 02--Notre Dame will need some help, but its College Football Playoff hopes survived after a 24-20 victory Saturday against Temple. Quarterback DeShone Kizer threw for 299 yards, the final 17 of which came via the winning touchdown pass to Will Fuller with just over two minutes left. He ran for 143 more and two touchdowns.

Offense

B. Kizer countered two red-zone interceptions in the second quarter first with his legs. With the Owls smothering C.J. Prosise to the tune of 25 yards on 14 carries, Kizer carried the load by carrying the ball 17 times, including a 79-yard touchdown run. Chris Brown led the pass catchers with six for 72 yards.

Defense

A-. The Irish were burned on another trick play, the fourth this season, but this one went for just 22 yards. For the second game in a row, KeiVarae Russell's late interception helped seal a victory. Jaylon Smith had 10 tackles and Romeo Okwara six, including three for a loss.

Special teams

B-. No harm, no fouls. Justin Yoon had a 23-yard field goal, Tyler Newsome did his kickoff thing (63.4 average) but struggled a bit punting (33.8 average).

Coaching

A-. Aside from a minor sideline skirmish between coach Brian Kelly and assistant strength and conditioning coach David Grimes, who appeared to be approaching an official to dispute a call, the Irish came up aces in the end.
