Grading Notre Dame's performance vs. Navy

Nov. 03--Notre Dame doesn't like to win easy. Each of the Irish's last three victories have all had their moments of imperfection, but the Irish have been able to do enough to avoid disaster. Against Navy, it meant relying on the offense to compensate for a struggling defense.

Offense

A Everett Golson became the first quarterback in Notre Dame history to throw for three touchdowns and run for three in the same game, and the Irish needed it. Tarean Folston continued to assert himself as the Irish's top running threat with 149 yards.

Defense

C- The Irish employed a new scheme to try to stop Navy's triple-option attack, but to disappointing results. On the bright side, Notre Dame did get contributions from several young and seldom-used players, including defensive lineman Justin Utupo and linebacker Nyles Morgan.

Special teams

F Kyle Brindza failed to convert both of his field goals -- one missed, one blocked -- in the fourth quarter, while Cody Riggs nearly lost a punt deep in Irish territory. Not the best day for a typically steady special teams.

Coaching

C Coach Brian Kelly took responsibility for Golson's interception, and the Irish looked ill-prepared to handle Navy's offense, but the Irish had a solid offensive game plan and kept their composure as the momentum shifted in the second half.
