Grading Illinois' performance vs. Ohio State

Nov. 03--Even Illinois coach Tim Beckman conceded not much went right for the Illini Saturday night at Ohio State, where the Illini lost 55-14.

Penalties, injuries, turnovers. The problems mounted for the Illini as they quickly unraveled against the superior Buckeyes.

Offense

F The Illini turned the ball over four times, including two interceptions by quarterback Reilly O'Toole and fumbles from quarterback Aaron Bailey and running back Josh Ferguson. An injured offensive line didn't help the Illini, who picked up only 106 rushing yards and 243 total yards.

Defense

F The defense allowed 545 yards, and the Buckeyes scored on nine of 13 series, not including the last when they were running out the clock. Without a single player going more than 69 yards, Ohio State racked up 296 yards on the ground.

Special teams

D Thank punter Justin DuVernois (44.8-yard average) for saving the Illini from flunking. The Buckeyes started several drives with excellent field position, some the fault of the offense's turnovers. Kicker David Reisner missed a 47-yard field-goal attempt.

Coaching

F It's understandable that the Illini would lose to Ohio State. What's unacceptable is that the Illini were far from competitive.
