Grading Broncos’ selection of Juwann Winfree in NFL draft

For the Denver Broncos’ final selection of the 2019 NFL draft (unless they trade back into it), the team selected a big wide receiver from Colorado.

Juwann Winfree doesn’t have flashy college stats or a blazing time in the 40-yard dash, but he is the kind of player who will get the job done on the field in more ways than one.

Winfree can make tough, contested catches and he is a technical route runner. Perhaps above all is his willingness and ability to be a blocker in the running game.

The Broncos need some additional targets in the passing game. The days of Demaryius Thomas are over and Emmanuel Sanders is on the other side of 30. That leaves the team with last season’s top rookies Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton and not much depth behind that.

Winfree should be able to jump right into that mix and compete for a spot on the roster.

The Broncos gave up their last two picks in this draft (Nos. 212 and 237) to the Carolina Panthers in order to move up and get Winfree. John Elway and his staff must see something.

Grade: B
