Gracie Abrams feared 'stable' relationship with Paul Mescal had left her with nothing to write about

Gracie Abrams is happy with Paul Mescal

Gracie Abrams feared her "secure and stable" relationship with Paul Mescal would "threaten" her music.

The 26-year-old singer - who has been dating the Hamnet star for around two years - felt "talked out" following the release of her 2024 album The Secret of Us, and having previously channelled her insecurity in her past romances into her songs, she was unsure what she had left to say.

She told America's Vogue magazine: "I felt talked out.

“I was worried feeling secure and stable was threatening my drive to write music. It freaked me out.”

Fortunately, Gracie's regular collaborator Aaron Dessner was able to help her move forward with her music.

She said: “I have learned from Aaron that it's okay to mine deeper and refine what you are naturally inclined to do, even if that looks less shiny and new on the outside."

Gracie spent a lot of time in London while Paul was filming Hamnet, and she loved seeing how energised he felt with his work on the Chloe Zhao-directed film, in which he starred with Jessie Buckley.

She said: “It feels like every day you come home and read the greatest book ever—that's what it's like to be in conversation with someone making something like that.

“The person you love gets to be surrounded by witches. It's magical.”

And the Hit the Wall singer cherishes the quiet life she and Paul lead together.

She noted: "[It is] the opposite of what the last four years have been like."

Gracie loves her career but also wants to enjoy quality time with the people she loves, and to raise a family of her own one day.

She said: “I’ve had such a rampant imagination about the rest of my life.

“I want consistent time to be with my people.

“I want to be a mom, eventually.”

When it comes to her professional life, she's open to making more movies, or being "tested" with a theatre role.

She added: “I think about when I’m 85, if I’m lucky enough to get there, I want to be able to look back and be like, ‘I did that weird thing.’ I want a full life.”
