Mobile app GrabBike still lags behind Bangkok's ubiquitous motorcycle taxis in terms of preference, according to a poll by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida).
Most people in Bangkok and surrounding areas still take motorcycle taxis from their designated roadside spots rather than GrabBike, according to the 1,251 respondents, from various occupations, who were polled between May 30-31.
Asked whether they prefer public motorcycle taxis or GrabBike, 66%, chose motorcycle taxis because they are available at known spots along city roads. About 34% said they preferred GrabBike, while less than 1% were uncertain or had no comment.
Of those who backed public motorcycle taxis, 73% said they use them because they are available everywhere; 25% said they regularly use public motorcycle taxis; and 18% said they personally know the drivers.
As for respondents who chose GrabBike, 65% said the mobile app is more convenient; 41% said they know the fare -- which is calculated by distance -- before using the service; and 33% said the service has better riders.
Last month, Bangkok motorcycle taxi drivers held a protest in front of Grab's headquarters on New Phetchaburi Road demanding the firm stop allowing private riders to offer rides.
