Days after launching GPT-5 Sam Altman has indicated that GPT-6 may not be far off. In conversation with some reports in San Francisco, Altman stated that the next model in the company’s lineup will come faster than the gap between GPT-4 and GPT-5, according to a CNBC report.
Obviously, Altman didn’t provide a timeline but said GPT-6 will be different from its predecessors. The model is expected to adapt more to users rather than just respond to them, potentially allowing people to create personalized chatbots that reflect individual preferences and routines. Apart from that, he also highlighted memory as the key to making ChatGPT “truly personal.”
Furthermore, Altman stressed that future models like GPT-6 will need to balance advanced memory features with privacy safeguards, particularly when dealing with sensitive information such as medical or legal queries. He also hinted at broader ambitions, including interest in neural interfaces, robotics, and faster data center technologies.
Though it’s worth keeping in mind that the tech giant has recently launched its most powerful GPT-5 model, which introduced a smart base model for quick responses, a deeper reasoning model for complex tasks, and a real-time router that automatically selects the best approach depending on the prompt, while it was billed as a major leap forward, many users felt the rollout fell short of expectations.
So no matter how soon OpenAI is going to release GPT-6, for now GPT-5 remains the core product of the company, and the next iteration is still quite far away. However, since Altman is openly talking about GPT-6, it indicates that the company has already started working on it.
