The other day, OpenAI launched its most powerful AI model named GPT-5. Now the company has unveiled all the details about the model, like its availability, usage limits, and more. So in this story, I have compiled all the information. Let’s get started:
GPT-5 Now Default for Logged-In Users
The new GPT-5 is now the default model for all logged-in ChatGPT users, and it replaces the previous version. The new system automatically switches between regular chat and a deeper “Thinking” mode depending on the task. For complex prompts, GPT-5 automatically enters Thinking mode and applies extra reasoning to provide more accurate answers. Also, users can manually switch back to a quicker response with the “Get a quick answer” button.
Usage Limits by Plan
Here’s how message limits work for each ChatGPT plan:
- Free users: 10 GPT-5 messages every 5 hours, plus one GPT-5 Thinking message per day. After hitting the limit, the system switches to a lighter mini model.
- Plus users: Up to 80 messages every 3 hours and 200 GPT-5 Thinking messages per week. After the limit, chats revert to the mini model.
- Pro and Team users: Higher limits and access to GPT-5 Thinking Pro. These users can continue using GPT-5 models with fewer restrictions but are still subject to abuse guardrails.
Also, do keep in mind that the weekly GPT-5 Thinking message cap applies only when users manually select the mode. Automatic switching doesn’t count toward this limit. Apart from that, users who are on the paid plan, like Plus, Pro, and Team, can choose between different GPT-5 modes via the model picker. It includes manual access to GPT-5 Thinking for more complex tasks and GPT-5 Thinking Pro for deeper analysis.
Furthermore, as the GPT-5 becomes the new default model across the platform, OpenAI is retiring some older models. This includes GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.5, GPT-4.1-mini, o4-mini, o4-mini-high, o3, and o3-pro. Any ongoing conversations that were using these models will now automatically shift to their GPT-5 equivalent. For example, chats using GPT-4x or o4 variants will transition to GPT-5, those using o3 will move to GPT-5 Thinking, and conversations based on o3-pro will switch to GPT-5 Pro, which is available only to users on the Pro and Team plans.
