OpenAI is setting up the stage to launch its much-awaited GPT-5 this summer. It will be the biggest release to unify capabilities across its existing model lineup. According to the company, GPT-5 will combine the advanced reasoning of its “O” series with the multi-modal capabilities found in the GPT-4 series.
At the moment, ChatGPT comes with different models for different tasks, which often confuse users due to similar names and unclear capabilities. So we are hoping that GPT-5 will fix this by delivering a single powerful model that simplifies usage while enhancing performance across the board.
“We’re truly excited to not just make a new great frontier model, we’re also going to unify our two series,” said Romain Huet, OpenAI’s Head of Developer Experience. “The breakthrough of reasoning in the O-series and the breakthroughs in multi-modality in the GPT-series will be unified, and that will be GPT-5.”
VP Jerry Tworek echoed the same on Reddit, calling GPT-5 a “foundational model” that will make current tasks better and reduce the need for model switching. While there’s no confirmed release date yet, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has indicated a summer timeline for GPT -5’s rollout.
ChatGPT Could Soon Allow Students to Study Together

Along with the GPT-5, the company is also testing a new “Study Together” mode inside ChatGPT. Though not yet live, references to this feature have been floating around since May, and testers have spotted early versions recently.
The idea seems to be aimed at students, either by allowing collaborative studying within ChatGPT or by turning the AI into a personal study partner. Details are still scarce, but the move indicates that OpenAI is exploring ways to expand its footprint in the education space.
However, if this “Study Together” feature rolls out to the public, then it will have to face tough competition from NotebookLM. As it has received a truckload of features since its smartphone app launch, it is quite popular amongst students, researchers, and educators. For example, recently, the platform started allowing sharing notebooks with anyone using a public link. Apart from that, Google is also working on several new features.
