GPs in Scotland could close for Queen's funeral - is your surgery open?

A number of GP practices across Scotland are set to close for the Queen's funeral.

The Scottish Government advised public health boards across the country could face disruption as they plan to pay tribute to her Majesty on Monday, September 19. The day has been declared a bank holiday by the UK Government when the State Funeral takes place.

Scots may face some disruption to health services on the day. Patients have been urged to to visit their local NHS website for further details on how they might be affected.

It is understood a number of GP practices have already contacted patients to let them know whether they intend to close.

Health boards are in the mist of delivering their winter vaccination programme. Some have said that those appointments scheduled for Monday will be honoured, but provisions have been made for those who want to reschedule flu and Covid-19 vaccination appointments.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “Health boards have been given guidance to support their planning for the public holiday for the funeral which underlines the importance of essential healthcare services continuing. This includes pre-planned treatments, and the winter vaccination programme .

“Many NHS staff and patients will understandably wish to pay appropriate tribute to Her Majesty The Queen and watch the State Funeral on Monday. This will inevitably lead to disruption of some services, although this will be minimised as much as possible.

“Patients should visit their local NHS website for further details.”
