GPs have not been consulted and don’t have the resources to provide Covid recovery certs.
And a national head of GPs has said handwritten letters from docs would be “completely chaotic” and unenforceable.
Family doctors have spoken out to say they already have their hands full with Covid cases and would not have the time to take on the onerous task of issuing recovery letters as well.
Dr Denis McAuley, chairman of the IMO’s (Irish Medical Organisation) GP committee and a practising GP in Donegal believes that handwritten certs from doctors are not a good idea.
He told RTE’s Today with Claire Byrne Show: “The plan has to have very simple messaging so that people can understand it and it can be policed.
“So, having different certs, different handwritten certs, stamps and so forth floating around is completely chaotic.
“So you have to have a unified plan with one unified source for that.
“And unfortunately for a number of very good reasons General Practice can’t be that source.”
