GP surgery in Peterlee temporarily closed for deep cleaning 'after patient tested for coronavirus'

A GP surgery in County Durham was closed to patients for around an hour as deep cleaning took place inside the practice.

It is believed that the cleaning took place after a patient went to the William Brown Centre in Peterlee and was tested for coronavirus on Wednesday afternoon.

The surgery on Manor Way in Peterlee town centre then closed its doors for around an hour and patients who arrived for appointments were turned away.

The GP practice has confirmed that deep cleaning took place during the closure and it has now been reopened.

A spokesperson for the William Brown Centre said: "There is no cause for concern.

"[The closure] was purely precautionary and the surgery has reopened.

"It was closed for deep cleaning, that was all.

"There is no risk to patients coming into the practice.

"Advice was given and we took those precautions."

Signs on the surgery door urge those with suspected coronavirus symptoms not to enter the building and to use the NHS 111 service instead for advice.
