GP surgery in Brighton shuts after staff member tests positive for coronavirus

A GP surgery in Brighton has been temporarily closed down after a staff member has tested positive for coronavirus, according to the  BBC.

Patients at County Oak Medical Centre have been advised to contact NHS 111 phone service if they have concerns.

BBC Sussex posted a tweet on Monday afternoon to say that sources had informed their health correspondent, Mark Norman.

Earlier today, it was confirmed that the total number of coronavirus cases in the UK now stands at eight, following a further four confirmed cases.

Chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, said the four people infected are all understood to be contacts of a businessman who was diagnosed in Brighton last week and who contracted the virus at a conference in Singapore.

On his way back to the UK, he visited a chalet in a ski region of France, where five other Britons were subsequently taken ill with the virus.

He said: "Four further patients in England have tested positive for novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to eight.

"The new cases are all known contacts of a previously confirmed UK case, and the virus was passed on in France.

"Experts at Public Health England continue to work hard tracing patient contacts from the UK cases.

"They successfully identified these individuals and ensured the appropriate support was provided.
