GP surgery closed down in Brighton after 'staff member tests positive for coronavirus'

A GP surgery in Brighton has been temporarily closed down after reports that a staff member has tested positive for coronavirus.

Patients at the County Oak Medical Centre have been advised to contact NHS 111 if they have concerns, the Manchester Evening News reports.

BBC Sussex posted a tweet on Monday afternoon to say sources had informed their health correspondent, Mark Norman about the staff member's illness.

It is being reported that the member of staff is a GP at the practice.

A sign on the door to the surgery says the building is closed "due to operational difficulties".

A deep clean by workers wearing full body suits was seen to be taking place inside the practice on Monday.

It has now been confirmed that the total number of coronavirus cases in the UK now stands at eight, following a further four confirmed cases.

This is out of a total of 1,114 people tested for the virus in the UK.

The relatives with the first two cases of the virus in the UK were taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary after falling ill in York.

Chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, said the latest four people confirmed to be infected are all understood to be contacts of a businessman who was diagnosed in Brighton last week and who contracted the virus at a conference in Singapore.

On his way back to the UK, he visited a chalet in a ski region of France, where five other Britons were subsequently taken ill with the virus.

He said: "Four further patients in England have tested positive for novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to eight.

"The new cases are all known contacts of a previously confirmed UK case, and the virus was passed on in France.

"Experts at Public Health England continue to work hard tracing patient contacts from the UK cases.

"They successfully identified these individuals and ensured the appropriate support was provided.
