GP says more children are being infected with Delta variant in Northern Ireland

A GP in Northern Ireland has said they’re seeing more and more children being infected with the highly transmissible Delta variant as health experts remain on alert.

Dr Tom Black, who is Chair of the British Medical Association in NI, told RTE’s Morning Ireland that kids who are infected are presenting with symptoms similar to upper respiratory tract infections.

While the UK experiences a setback in its plans for a full reopening due to this strain, Irish officials are keeping a close eye on its progression across the country.

Dr. Black said so far the Covid-19 vaccines are holding up well against the variant, while hospitalisations and ICU numbers remain low.

With the increase in the number of cases of this strain being detected here, some have suggested that the next easing of restrictions hangs in the balance.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said the next phase of our reopening may be delayed until later in July due to the rising concerns around Delta and its potential to bring about a fourth wave of Covid-19.

He said the Government will follow public health advice if it is to delay the planned reopening of indoor hospitality in just 11 days' time.

Meanwhile, NPHET team member Dr Mary Favier, who also appeared on Morning Ireland, said it is too early to make a final decision on the next phase of easing of restrictions.

As it stands, the early July date will see people allowed to host three other households inside the home, while the number of guests allowed to attend wedding receptions will increase to 50.

First communions, confirmations, and baptisms will resume as long as family gatherings afterward strictly adhere to public health advice on household mixing, including visitors to your home and indoor and outdoor dining.

A maximum of 50 people will be able to attend events at the majority of indoor venues, while up to 100 can attend larger venues with strict public health measures in place.

Outdoor venues will allow a maximum of 200 attendees for the majority of venues, and no more than 500 at outdoor areas with a minimum accredited capacity of 5,000.

Indoor training, exercise, and dance activities will recommence in pods of up to 6, and bars and restaurants will be allowed to reopen for indoor service.
