Gowran betting tips: Peter O'Hehir's selections for today's racing

The Ger Lyons-trained Basic Law will be strongly-fancied to land the opening median auction on a tough eight-race card in Gowran Park.

A gelded son of Lawman, the selection made a hugely promising debut on the opening day of the new season in Naas, encountering plenty of traffic problems while coming through the field and finishing strongly to finish second two and a half lengths behind all-the-way scorer Wargrave.

Third placed National Guard boosted the form with a maiden success at Dundalk while the 97-rated winner went on to finish a creditable fourth behind a couple of Guineas-bound colts Never No More and Madhmoon in the Ballylinch Stud 2,000 Guineas at Leopardstown on Saturday.

Normal improvement should make Basic Law tough to beat, despite a high draw.

Davy Russell mobbed by fans as he enjoys a meal in Kildare after Tiger Roll's Grand National win

Highlight of the card is the finale, the BetVictor Sponsoring Irish Racing Race, in which Jim Bolger’s consistent and reliable, 110-rated Twilight Payment sets the standard.

This tough six-year-old has locked horns with St Leger winners Order Of St George and Flag Of Honour.

And, although his only win last season came in a listed event at Down Royal, he comes from an in-form yard, will have no problem with this mile and six furlongs and gets the nod over Whirling Dervish and the fascinating, once-raced Hasanabad, which finished third to Hunting Horn and subsequent Irish Derby winner Latrobe in a Naas maiden last spring.

Bolger’s once-raced, €1 million purchase from France, Solage is a fascinating contender in the fillies maiden while top-weight Peshkova is my pick of the handicap action, in the first division of the seven-furlong 45-70 event.
