Gower Bike Ride 2021: Everything you need to know about the event on Sunday, July 25

The Gower Bike Ride will be taking place this weekend for the first time in two years after skipping a year due to the Covid pandemic.

The annual event is hoped to attract around 500 riders over the weekend.

The Junior Bike Ride, for those aged 14 and under, is on Saturday afternoon and the main Gower Bike Ride will be taking place on Sunday.

What route will riders take?

Saturday and Sunday’s rides will start and finish at the Secret Bar and Kitchen in Swansea Bay, directly opposite St Helen’s Cricket Ground.

The official car park is the recreation ground.

For the Junior Bike Ride, Saturday’s route will see young cyclists ride 8 miles along the cycle path on Swansea Bay on a return trip to the Mumbles.

On Sunday, there are two possible routes: 12 and 35 miles.

You can see the routes more clearly here.

What time do they start?

The Junior Bike Ride starts at 2pm on Saturday afternoon whilst both of Sunday’s routes begin between 8am and 8.30am in the morning.

What time do people need to be at the start?

Juniors should aim to arrive for 1.45pm on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, riders can begin registering at 7.45am and once they have received a wristband, organisers want riders to begin their cycle as soon as possible as they will be operating a rolling start.

How much does it cost to take part?

It costs £10 for the Junior Bike Ride and £15 for the Gower Bike Ride.

Part of these proceeds will be going to the charities 2 Wish Upon a Star and Mind Cymru, as nominated by the South Wales Evening Post and Wales Online.

How much will it impact traffic on Gower?

The organisers expect no traffic issues as a result of the ride, but both cyclists and motorists are urged to take care while navigating the roads.

How many riders are likely to take part?

As previously mentioned, it is hoped that around 500 riders will turn up over the weekend.

What is the weather forecast for the weekend?

According to the BBC, Saturday is meant to see "thundery showers and a moderate breeze" whilst Sunday will see "light rain showers and a gentle breeze."

Both days have around 30% chance of precipitation during the hours when the cycles are taking place and we could see highs of around 20 degrees Celsius.

The Met Office has, however, issued a yellow weather warning for rain for the entirety of Saturday and Sunday.

What else do you need to know?

Registration for the Junior Bike Ride closes tonight, July 21, and you have until Friday to sign up for Sunday's event.

Both junior riders and those between the ages of 14 and 18 who are planning on riding on Sunday must be accompanied by an adult.

Whilst many of the Covid restrictions have been eased, the organisers of the event say they will still be “Covid cautious.”

To this end, they will have spare masks, give each rider their own hand sanitiser, adhere to a rolling start, follow Covid regulations at the refreshment stops and will not be giving out medals.

Instead, riders will be photographed on completing the gruelling ride.

There will be toilet facilities at The Secret.
