At a time when Hindu right-wing organisations are calling for a ban on halal meat, Minister for Education B.C. Nagesh said in Madikeri on Thursday that the issue does not fall in the Government domain and it will not interfere in it.
“It is a matter of personal belief and those who believe in the practice will buy halal meat and those who do not, will not buy it. A lot of people became aware of the concept of halal only recently,’, he added.
The Minister said Halal is a religious tradition or practice and the Government has nothing to do with it nor does halal practice come under any guidelines or rules framed by the Government.
Incidentally, BJP general secretary C.T. Ravi had described the sale of halal meat as ‘’economic jihad’’ and wanted it to be boycotted by the Hindus.
Ahead of Ugadi, certain right-wing organisations including Hindu Jana Jagratha Samithi have called for a boycott of halal meat.
