Govt to use satellite to map plot limits

Land officials will use satellite mapping to demarcate 80,000 plots of land across the country, in a bid to resolve land conflicts over overlapping areas and help boost land usage and development.

The use of satellite mapping will help to foster trust among villagers, as well as financial institutions which are considering loan requests with land as collateral, Land Department chief Prayun Rattanaseri said on Wednesday. "Not only will people not object to their land rights being determined by this more reliable solution, but they will also have more access to capital and hopefully be inspired to further develop their land," he said.

The department is planning to use the "RTK GNSS Network" satellite to survey for demarcations across the country, and surveyors will be deployed to re-check the demarcation.

The 80,000 plots of land are located in 18 provinces -- Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phrae, Nan, Kamphaeg Phet, Phitsanulok, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chachoengsao, Krabi, Phangnga and Songkhla.

The use of satellite mapping is expected to reduce the number of conflicts between the government and local villagers. "Authorities can also apply the findings to develop other fields," Mr Prayun said.
