The government has decided to offer subsidies of up to 25 million yen each to organizers of concerts, theatrical performances, exhibitions and other cultural events that are canceled due to the state of emergency declaration to contain the coronavirus crisis.
The current state of emergency was declared last Sunday in Tokyo and three prefectures including Osaka, and the government requested the cancellation or postponement of art and cultural events for the duration.
Since the request will further torment many art and culture organizations that are already suffering amid the prolonged pandemic, the government decided to increase the maximum amount of the subsidy to 25 million yen to help make up for cancellation expenses for venues and personnel.
The government also will increase the maximum cancellation compensation for national-level sports events and professional sports matches from 10 million yen per contest to 25 million yen.
The measures are aimed at easing the adverse effect of the declaration on cultural and sports enterprises.
As for the cooperation fees of 200,000 yen per day to be paid to large commercial facilities such as department stores that have agreed to close businesses while the state of emergency is in place, the government is ready to respond flexibly to each case depending on the number of buildings involved. The government is planning to pay 20,000 yen per day to each retail store inside such facilities. If the commercial facilities applied for the cooperation fees including those for their retail tenants, then an administration fee will be added to the sum.
