The government has decided to provide Iran, hit hard by the new coronavirus, with 2.5 billion yen in medical assistance through international organizations, several government sources said Wednesday.
As a country that maintains friendly ties with Iran, Tokyo will join hands with Tehran in the fight against the spread of the virus as U.S. economic sanctions are making it hard for the Middle East country to secure medicine and other necessities.
Under its second emergency package of coronavirus measures compiled Tuesday, the government will provide 15.5 billion yen to international organizations mainly for their assistance to countries affected by the virus. Of that amount, about 2.5 billion yen will be earmarked to support Iran, according to the sources.
The assistance will be provided through six international organizations, including the World Health Organization, to deliver protective clothing, gloves, testing equipment and other medical devices. The assistance will also be used to provide training for medical workers.
