The government is seeking new markets for Thai shrimps after Malaysia announced an import suspension earlier this month, says Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun.
Malaysia has suspended imports of five shrimp species from Thailand, starting June 1.
Ms Suphajee said the ministry must urgently seek alternative markets to absorb the 300–400 tonnes of shrimp previously exported there each month.
While local operators, particularly those in the southern region, distribute their products to local markets across the country, Ms Suphajee said the government planned to distribute shrimp through the Thais Help Thais Plus co-payment scheme, as well as through campaigns with traders and retailers to promote Thai shrimp consumption.
Ms Suphajee said the governments of the two nations must initiate talks at the department level to find a solution.
However, if they fail to produce an outcome, discussions at the regional level or the World Trade Organisation (WTO) would then be considered to determine an appropriate trade response.
Meanwhile, Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said he had sought solutions with Mohamad Sabu, Malaysia's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, and is awaiting confirmation of the negotiation process.
Mr Suriya said Malaysia's import suspension of Thai shrimp followed the contamination test on Thai sea bass.
He said Malaysia has to assess Thailand's disease control measures for marine animals before the issue can be resolved.
