The government is planning to redevelop Klong Ku Muang Derm and Klong Lord, two canals located on Rattanakosin Island into an important tourist attraction reminiscent of England's Cotswolds, a Defence Ministry source said on Monday.

The source spoke about the project after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told the media and local residents at a volunteer activity to dredge and clean up both canals to mark Her Majesty the Queen's birthday that the country should follow a foreign model to landscape the canals.

The source that after the success of the Lat Phrao canal redevelopment, Gen Prayut came up with his "dream" project inspired by England's Bourton on the Water which has been dubbed the "Little Venice of the Cotswolds".

The Cotswolds is an area of rolling hills in south central England.

Defence Ministry permanent secretary, Gen Nat Intarachareon, said he will proceed with the plan.

"Yellow star flowers will be cultivated along the canals ... Old buildings will be renovated and repainted in soft yellow," he said.
