Govt extends attendance limits; decision might affect Tokyo Games

The government has decided to extend attendance limits for large-scale events by two months. The restrictions, which were to expire at the end of April, will continue until the end of June.

In areas where a state of emergency or emergency-level priority measures are not in place, the limit will continue to be 5,000 people or less or within 50% of venue capacity, whichever is greater.

The decision was made by the government's subcommittee on measures against the novel coronavirus on Tuesday.

Through May 11, spectators will not be allowed at events in principle in the four prefectures of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo, which are under a state of emergency. Spectators will be limited to 5,000 people or less in areas where priority measures are in place.

The extension of attendance caps may affect the decision on spectators at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics that is slated to be announced in June, as limits for the Games are expected to be in line with attendance restrictions for other large-scale events.
