The mortality rate of coronavirus patients aged 65 or older who have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine is about one-fifth of those who have not received the vaccine, according to data compiled by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.
The ministry reported the finding at a meeting of its advisory body on Wednesday.
Utilizing the HER-SYS information-sharing system that centrally manages data on coronavirus cases, the ministry examined the number of deaths and mortality rates of coronavirus patients aged 65 or older in June, as well as the number of vaccine doses they had received.
The mortality rate was 4.31% for those who had not been vaccinated, compared to 3.03% for those who had received one vaccine dose and 0.89% for those who had received two vaccine doses.
There was no significant difference in mortality rates between the Indian delta variant at 4.5%, and the alpha variant, which was first identified in Britain, at 5.6%.
