Governor Ivey Appoints Stewart to Alabama State Board of Education

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) appointed Dr. Tommie Stewart to represent District 5 of the Alabama State Board of Education on January 7, 2020. Stewart’s appointment was effective immediately and filled the vacancy left by former Board member Ella Bell, who died in November 2019.

Stewart previously served as the dean of Alabama State University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and holds a doctorate from Florida State University.

The Alabama State Board of Education is an elected executive agency responsible for managing the state’s public K-12 education. It consists of the governor—who also serves as the board’s president—and eight other members who are elected to four-year terms by district. Elections to the board are staggered, with Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7 holding elections in presidential election years, and Districts 2, 4, 6, and 8 in midterm years.
