Government will try bring 'ISIS bride' Lisa Smith back to Ireland, says Coveney

The government will try and find a way to bring 'ISIS bride' Lisa Smith and her daughter back home, Tanaiste Simon Coveney has confirmed.

Speaking in Cork, Mr Coveney said: "Like all consular cases we want to look after Irish people and bring them home if they want to come home.

Lisa Smith had appeared on ITV on a video posted online in which she claimed to be British (ITV)

“This is an unusual case because of her background the last number of years but the Taoiseach and I have made it very clear she’s an Irish citizen, she’s the responsibility of Ireland.

Government plan to bring 'ISIS bride' Lisa Smith back to Ireland

“We have a responsibility towards her and in particular her daughter and we will try and follow through on that responsibility and find a way to bring her home.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs will meet later to plan her return.

Mr Coveney added: “Even this afternoon there is a meeting between my department, the Department of Defence and the Department of Justice to coordinate a government  response in relation to how we assist.

“There is heightened concern because there is a two year old girl involved in this as well."
