Scottish football season hangs in the balance after Celtic player's quarantine rule breach

The Scottish football season could be halted after it emerged a Celtic player breached quarantine rules after taking a secret trip to Spain.

Defender Boli Bolingoli travelled to the virus hotspot without his club knowing and then failed to self isolate on his return.

Instead he chose to train with his teammates and even featured in the club's Scottish Premiership draw with Kilmarnock at the weekend, putting players and staff at risk.

After learning of the breach the Scottish Government said they had begun discussions with the club, and warned the incident could see Scottish football paused.

A spokesperson said: "The Scottish Government is aware of reports of a Celtic FC player having broken quarantine rules last week.

"We are currently in discussion with the club and football governing bodies to establish the facts.

"If confirmed as another serious incident within Scottish football, where protocols have been breached at the risk of wider public health, then the Scottish Government will have little choice but to consider whether a pause is now needed in the resumption of the game in Scotland."

The incident came after two Aberdeen players tested positive for coronavirus and six others were forced to self-isolate for two weeks after breaching rules by visiting a city centre bar.

This caused their weekend's match with St Johnstone to be postponed, and prompted a call between national clinical director, Professor Jason Leitch, and all Premiership managers and captains to remind them of their responsibilities.
