Government urging everyone to check passports amid new rules after Brexit

Home Office officials are busily preparing for the imminent departure from the EU by warning up to a million people they may need to make changes to their passport.

There will be two new rules specifically for passport holders in the UK after Brexit and to prepare people the Government is set to issue warnings via text message to those that have saved heir mobile numbers as part of their registration process.

The new rules will apply to visiting countries in Europe only if there is a no deal Brexit in October.

The warnings are in a bid to ease disruption that might be caused by crashing out of the union, in which we have had free travel.

The first rule means travellers will need to have at least six months left on their passport.

In addition any extra months on a passport over 10 years may not count towards the six months needed. A passport may have extra months if the holder renewed their previous passport before it expired.

While those who gave numbers when they registered will be warned, those that did not are being warned to check their passport and see when it runs out, whether they receive an alert or not.

It normally takes up to three weeks to renew a passport though it may take even longer if more information is required.

The new alerts are part of the UK Government's new campaign called Get Ready for Brexit, reports NorthWalesLive.

Other advice promoted within the initiative focuses on getting travel insurance to ensure sufficient healthcare coverage, making sure they have the right driving documents, and getting a health certificate for their pet.

It comes after the UK Government updated its warnings for countries across the world, issuing guidance on various factors which could be a danger to its citizens who are visiting.

A list of more than 200 countries and territories has been released providing vital warnings for those jetting off overseas by the Foreign Office.

The information covers a whole range of issues, from as minor as vaccination advice to more sinister threats including unlicensed taxis and terror risks .

And in other news the Home Office  refused to give a man a passport because his name is too rude.

Kenny's surname used to be Kennard but he changed it using a deed poll back in 2016 .

He's managed to get a driving license with his new name but faced a problem when he tried to get a passport.
