Government updates lockdown rules affecting learner drivers

The DVSA has updated its coronavirus guidelines regarding those learning to drive in the UK - and it affects learners in England, Scotland and Wales in different ways.

The national lockdown, which came into force last week, introduced a set of stricter travel rules including an instruction to stay within your "local area".

Essential journeys are still permitted but this had led to confusion over whether learner drivers would be allowed to drive under these rules to practise for their driving tests.

Instructor-led driving lessons across the UK were suspended as the third national lockdown came into force on Tuesday, January 5.

But an update to the DVSA's guidelines now states that learner drivers in England cannot practise driving in their own vehicles either. This includes a ban on learners driving for essential journeys.

Meanwhile, those living in Scotland or Wales can legally practise driving with members of their household or support bubble in, but it must be travel for work, education or other essential journeys.

Licensed drivers must not travel outside of their "local area" either, except for a few specific reasons.
