Government U-turn as Pandemic Unemployment Payment recipients allowed to travel abroad

Pandemic Unemployment Payment and Jobseekers Allowance recipients will be allowed to go on holidays following a dramatic Government U-turn.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys told the Dail she will sign a regulation allowing those receiving either payment to travel to countries on Ireland's green list.

The news comes as the Government came under fire after it emerged that people who travelled abroad would have their payments stopped.

Minister Humphreys said she has directed her department to review cases where people who travelled to such countries had their payments stopped, conceding that her department could have communicated better on the issue.

She added that of the 2,500 payments that had ceased, 90% no longer resided in Ireland.

Ms Humphreys said she has listened to the concerns raised by both the public and the opposition and accepted that many people who may have travelled abroad were not aware of the regulations.
