Government shutdown: What happens next while Trump is likely golfing again?

After Donald Trump and his Republican buddies refused to agree to the clauses of a short-term funding bill addressing healthcare and federal spending proposed by the Democrats, the U.S. government has officially entered into a state of complete shutdown. This means that every government department, barring a few essential ones, will remain suspended until further notice.

Individuals working in the departments that will remain suspended during the shutdown will be sent on leave without pay. Those working during the period, on the other hand, would have to be on the job but would not be compensated for their time and effort. Although both situations have similar outcomes, the lack of pay for those working is much more exploitative in practice.

Following a momentary lapse in government functions due to shutdowns such as this, people are usually reinstated to their previous jobs and often compensated for their time off. However, this time, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened that if the bill doesn’t go his way, then he will permanently fire several federal workers who are not part of essential departments. Speaking to the press, Trump said in an address:

“We’ll be laying off a lot of people. They’re going to be Democrats.”

Donald Trump‘s comments about the Democrats do not come as a surprise. From the time he resumed office for a second term in 2025, Trump has done everything but address real issues and take steps to better the U.S.’s current state. When he isn’t putting the government to a standstill or making islamophobic, racist, misogynistic, and derogatory comments about all those that oppose him, he is in one of his properties playing golf.

The man has played golf for almost a quarter of his term this year, having spent approximately 150 days at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, according to an article published on Newsweek on September 25, 2025. This is the same person who once accused the former U.S. President, Barack Obama, of ignoring all the “problems’ and playing golf.

It appears that Trump will return to his favourite pastime as government functions come to a temporary halt. Who knows?
