Government set to reject move to Level 5 restrictions

The government has pushed back and is set to reject NPHET’s recommendation to move the country to Level 5 restrictions.

It’s understood that the whole country will be placed under Level 3 restrictions, with a focus on stronger adherence and enforcement.

A source from the Department of the Taoiseach said the government has taken on board NPHET advice, however, they are against moving the country to Level 5 on the Living with Covid plan.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar and Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan all held talks with Dr Tony Holohan this morning, where he outlined NPHET's case for a national lockdown.

Level 5 restrictions would see people mostly confined to their homes again with gatherings of any kind no longer permitted.

Pubs, restaurants and cafes would all be forced to shut their doors only permitted to serve takeaway and delivery.

There would also be strict rules around funeral attendances and sporting events among many others.

Cabinet will meet at 5.30pm to discuss and sign off on the plan to move to either Level 3 or Level 4.
