Government scientist says lockdown rules 'are clear and apply to all'

One of the government's leading scientists said the coronavirus rules are clear and apply to everybody.

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer, was asked whether people in authority should lead and obey the rules as a government minister was asked about Dominic Cummings during Saturday's daily briefing.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden initially fielded the question about the Prime Minister's senior advisor.

“Dominic Cummings gave a very extensive explanation of his behaviour on Monday and answered all questions in relation to that," said Mr Dowden.

“The Prime Minister accepted that explanation and on that basis kept him in post and that remains the position.”

Prof Van-Tam then shared his views on the subject.

"In my opinion the rules are clear and they have always been clear," Prof Van-Tam said.

"In my opinion they are for the benefit of all.

"In my opinion they apply to all."

It has been alleged My Cummings breached lockdown rules after driving to Durham while suffering with coronavirus symptoms in late March.

At the time the government had instructed people to remain at home unless absolutely necessary, with certain provisos.

Last week Mr Cummings made a public statement in the garden of 10 Downing Street to give an account of his actions during the time in question.

He maintains that acted within the Government rules in force at the time.
