Government responds to claims schools will reopen after Easter holidays

Government officials have responded to claims that schools will reopen after the Easter holidays.

Primary and secondary schools were closed last month due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Students due to take GCSE and A level exams were told that they will receive grades in other ways as officials gave no indication of when schools would reopen.

On Wednesday, a number of news outlets reported that schools could possibly reopen after the Easter break in a bid to "kick start" the economy, meaning children would return to school within the next two weeks.

Now, the government have denied these claims stating that no decisions have been made to send children back until it is safe to do so.

A statement on the government 's website said: "Today, Wednesday 8 April, the Department for Education has issued a statement in response to reports that schools may reopen after the Easter holidays.

"The Times reported this morning on the suggestion the Government may reopen schools in an attempt to kick-start the economy.

"The same story has since been picked up by multiple other outlets.

"Our position on closures is clear: schools will remain closed until the scientific advice indicates it is safe to open them."

Services are in place at some schools to allow children of key workers to attend along with those described as "vulnerable".

The hubs have been used by many parents, carers and guardians who are involved in essential, frontline work, such as doctors, nurses, paramedics and other emergency services.

Stressing the point that schools would not be returning, a government spokesperson added: ""Schools will remain closed until further notice, except for children of critical workers and the children who are most vulnerable.

"We will re-open schools when the scientific advice indicates it is safe to do so."
