The Government failed to confirm a full redress scheme for homeowners affected by faulty Mica blocks in the Budget.
Defective building blocks containing mica have caused cracks and fissures to open in an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 homes, primarily in Mayo and Donegal.
Paddy Diver, one of the leaders of the campaign for 100% redress, told the Irish Mirror that some people were on “the verge of suicide.”
He said: “That might be hard-hitting and some people may not want to hear that but it’s true.
“Their homes are not safe to live in and they’ve nowhere to live.
The Government has still not committed to 100% redress for those affected by the issue - meaning families could be left with bills of tens of thousands of euro to fix or replace their falling-down homes.
The campaigners had called for the Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and the Minister for Public Expenditure to address the situation in the Dáil during the Budget.
Minister McGrath did so - but failed to confirm full redress, saying: "The Government acknowledges the devastation being felt by the thousands of households being affected by defective Mica building blocks.
"Following consideration of the working group report from the Department of Housing, the Government will bring forward proposals for a significantly enhanced scheme to address this important issue."
