White House confirms US President Donald Trump will meet with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in Shannon next month

The White House has officially confirmed that Donald Trump will travel to Ireland for a visit on June 5.

The US President will hold a bilateral meeting in Shannon with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

In a statement issued on Tuesday night, the White House said: "President J. Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have accepted the invitation of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar of Ireland to visit Ireland while they are in Europe for a state visit to the United Kingdom and for events in the United Kingdom and and France to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

"The President and Taoiseach will hold a bilateral meeting in Shannon on June 5."

Government officials have said they “are ready” for the visit.

It is believed the US President will travel to Doonbeg on June 5, where Trump International Golf Club and Hotel has been since 2002.

Hotels around Doonbeg are booked out for the three days - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - with no short term stays available in the area.

Gardai have already begun security duties at Shannon Airport ahead of the planned visit, even though the White House are yet to confirm it.

Gardaí have been deployed at a usually unmanned road and a security box at the entrance to the airport has housed officers monitoring traffic on a 24 hour basis since last Thursday.

A source said the meeting between Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and the POTUS will be held in Dromoland Castle in Co Clare.

Mr. Trump is expected to travel to France on June 6 for D-Day commemorations after his State visit to the UK the day before.

The US President last visited Ireland in 2014 when he was welcomed by then Minister for Finance Michael Noonan among others.
