Government official guidance on Premier League fixtures as Everton and Liverpool await decision

Official guidance from the Cabinet Office has recommended sporting bodies should consider cancelling events and fixtures on the day of Queen's state funeral - but are under no obligation to postpone this weekend's games.

The Premier League are holding a meeting at 11am today to discuss the appropriate course of action following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. It was last night announced that EFL games scheduled to take place this evening involving Burnley and Norwich City and Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County would not go ahead as planned, raising doubts over Premier League matches.

A decision regarding whether fixtures should be fulfilled is reportedly down to individual organisations, meaning the Premier League will have the final say as to whether or not both Everton and Liverpool can partake in their respective games against Arsenal and Wolves.

Martin Ziegler of the Times has added police availability could prove to be an issue for clubs as security in the capital is tightened in light of yesterday's major development. Should games go ahead, players are likely to observe a minute's silence as well as choosing to wear black armbands.

But it remains to be seen what stance the football authorities take. Mr Ziegler's full Times report states: "The Premier League and EFL are considering cancelling matches this weekend after the death of the Queen despite official guidance saying that there is no obligation to do so."

The text of the National Mourning Guidance document, published today, says this about 'major events, entertainment and sports':

"There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual organisations.

"As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.

"If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions.

"As a mark of respect, and in keeping with the tone of National Mourning, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands."
