Government moving ahead with plans to regulate e-scooters on Irish roads

A leading e-scooter company has welcomed the news that the Irish government is pressing ahead with plans to regulate e-scooters on roads.

The government published the Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021 on October 19th, detailing various legislative commitments including that of e-scooters.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan announced the publication, which states that "a new class of powered personal transporters (PPTs), including e-scooters, will be created, and the Minister will be able to provide for the use of these vehicles in public places under existing regulatory powers".

The government also announced legislation to support a more rapid implementation of BusConnects and the newly installed dynamic traffic management on the M50.

Additionally, they plan to strengthen laws to deal with dangerous and antisocial off-road use of scramblers, quads and other similar vehicles.

Commenting on the publication of the legislative plans, Duncan Robertson, manager of e-scooter company Dott said, "We’re delighted the Irish Government is moving ahead with plans to regulate the use of e-scooters on Irish roads.

"Our e-scooters make it easy to get around, reduce pollution and provide a great alternative to public transport. Dott already operates in more than 35 cities across Europe, and we hope to use our experience and best-in-class technology to ensure the Irish e-scooter roll out is as smooth as possible."
