Government minister urges people not to attend mass gatherings this weekend

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has advised the public not to attend mass gatherings this weekend.

Speaking at today's Downing Street briefing, the minister was referencing recent Black Lives Matter protests that have taken place around the country.

During the end of his opening briefing, the Transport Secretary said that despite decreasing figures for Covid-19 infections, the "insidious virus was still a threat".

The minister repeated Government advice to avoid public transport if possible and stressed that from Monday wearing a "face covering", which does not have to be a "surgical mask" on public transport is essential.

He then cautioned the public to avoid gatherings of more than six people which included protesting.

The Transport Secretary added: "I understand that people want to show their passion for issues that they care deeply about and we must never be complacent about stamping out racism and discrimination in this country.

"But please for the sake of your health and that of your friends and families, don’t attend mass gatherings.

"We’ve come along way and as we move towards recovery lets protect lives as well as livelihoods."

The figures for coronavirus deaths were also confirmed, as the Transport Secretary announced the total number of deaths in the UK to have reached 41,481 deaths - an increase of 202 deaths since yesterday.

He also announced that 6,434,713 tests now been carried out or posted out in the UK with 292,950 cases testing positive for the disease, an increase of 1541 from yesterday.
