Government issues flood alert for Merseyside as walkers given warning

The Government has issued a flood alert for Merseyside as well as giving an urgent warning to walkers in the area.

In an update, posted yesterday, the government issued one flood alert for Merseyside and one flood warning for the outer region.

This is due to high river levels and high tides being recorded.

The alert for Liverpool and Wirral to Widnes said: "River levels are expected to be higher than usual at Rock Park and Hale Village as a result of an exceptionally high tide in the evening.

"Consequently, flooding of low lying land and roads around the Mersey Estuary is expected...

"Flood alerts may also be required for subsequent high tides. Our incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels and will issue flood warnings if necessary.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."

A flood warning is also in force for at Fiddlers Ferry in Warrington, due to exceptionally high tides.

The warning states: "The high tide is expected to be higher than usual at Fiddlers Ferry as a result of exceptionally high tides.

"Consequently, flooding of the Fiddlers Ferry area is possible.

"Flood alerts may also be required for subsequent high tides, however, we do not expect the next high tide to reach flood warning levels.

"Our incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels and will issue further flood warnings if necessary.

"Please be aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the current situation."
