Government is considering introducing Covid vaccination passports, Boris Johnson confirms

Covid vaccine passports could be introduced in the UK, Boris Johnson has revealed.

Passports could be offered to people who have received a coronavirus vaccination, and might be required for entry to venues such as pubs or cinemas.

The idea is controversial, and is opposed by some MPs, who say they would be discriminatory.

But in a surprise announcement, Mr Johnson said the Government had ordered a review into whether to introduce the passports, which he called " Covid status certification".

Another option is to introduce certificates for people who have tested negative for coronavirus.

Mr Johnson told the House of Commons that a review will “consider the potential role of Covid status certification in helping venues to open safely”.

The Government's roadmap document, published today, said: "Covid status certification involves using testing or vaccination data to confirm indifferent settings that people have a lower risk of transmitting Covid-19 to others.

"The Government will review whether Covid-status certification could play a role in r-opening our economy, reducing restrictions on social contact and improving safety.

"This will include assessing to what extent certification would be effective in reducing risk, and the potential uses to enable access to settings or a relaxation of COVID Secure mitigations.

"The Government will also consider the ethical, equalities, privacy, legal and operational aspects of this approach and what limits, if any, should be placed on organisations using certification.

"It will draw on external advice to develop recommendations that take into account any social and economic impacts, and implications for disproportionately impacted groups and individuals’ privacy and security."
