Government hoping to stop cheap flights to sunny destinations in bid to 'save the planet'

Cheap flights to sunny holiday destinations will become a thing of the past in a bid to save the planet, Eamon Ryan has said.

The Green Party leader was speaking about Ireland’s Climate Action plan and the need to meet climate targets.

He said in order to halve emissions in transport, people will also need to do a lot less travelling.

Mr Ryan said he doesn’t expect people to be able to buy bargain flights for €10 in the future.

He said: “I’m working with the European Council at this present time.

“We had a transport meeting last week and one of the items on the agenda was the consideration into the future whether we should regulate, really low-cost, that sort of flights for €10 aren’t the norm.

“That would come from a European level rather than a national level because it requires international cooperation.”

When asked if people would still be able to fly to Malaga for €10, the Minister for Climate and Transport told RTÉ that people would still be flying but “won’t be going for €10.”

He said “we will have to develop solutions for people flying.”

Mr Ryan said that despite the “hardship and difficulties” that of the Covid-19 crisis, he said it brought benefits such as remote working which has reduced people travelling.
