Government 'hopeful' for international summer holidays

Summer holidays could be back on the cards, as the government confirmed it was "working intensively" on travel corridors.

In today's daily press briefing culture secretary Oliver Dowden said he was "hopeful" that people could travel internationally soon.

Mr Dowden was asked about international travel and he said: "We want to ensure that we don't import cases from other countries, thereby causing the numbers to rise, so we put in place this quarantine regime.

"Now we have got that in place, we are looking at, for example, corridors whereby, particularly, in countries that have low infection rates, we could allow travel between the United Kingdom and those countries.

"I know that the Transport Secretary is working intensively on this, alongside the Prime Minister and others.

"And I am hopeful that we will be able to make some progress on that."

In the same briefing Mr Dowden also hinted that gyms could reopen next month.

He said he recognised that people were "itching" to get back to the gym and other community sports.

Mr Dowden said he had been in talks with the sector and was hoping that progress could be made before July.

The Cabinet minister said he was working closely to get grassroots and community sport back up and running: "as soon as it is safe to do so - with an aim of the start of July at the very earliest".

But it was bad news for theatres as he said it would be "exceptionally difficult" for theatres to reopen because of social distancing rules.
