Government gives 50 per cent off restaurant meals in August

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced everyone in the country will be able to get a half-price meal in a pub, restaurant or cafe in August as part of a huge hand-out to get the economy moving.

People will be able to go to participating restaurants between Mondays and Wednesdays in August and get 50 per cent off any meal - up to a set limit.

Mr Sunak announced an “eat out to help out” discount offering 50% off, up to £10 per head, on meals out on certain days of the week during August.

The move is designed to get people back into the hospitality sector.

Hospitality and tourism has also been given a VAT break - with the rate cut from 20 per cent to 5per cent until January.

The announcement came in a mini Buidget in the House of Commons which also revealed grants for household of up to £10,000 to cover green initiavies - such as loft and wall insulation.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the Government’s response was a question of “values” not just economics, concluding: “We will not be defined by this crisis, but by our response to it.

“It is an unambiguous choice to make this moment meaningful for our country in a way that transcends the frustration and loss of recent months.

“It is a plan to turn our national recovery into millions of stories of personal renewal.

“It is our plan for jobs and I commend it to this House.”
