Government formation talks back on track as Fianna Fail and Fine Gael settle row - for now

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have settled their political row, for now.

Government formation talks between the two and the Greens are now back on track.

And everyone is saying the end of the month deadline for an agreement is still achievable.

The tiff involved Fianna Fáil concerns that planning is underway behind their backs for another election.

Fine Gael denied this and said it is just business as usual for the State apparatus to prepare contingency plans for an election in a pandemic.

The row escalated to the level where both party leaders, FF’s Micheál Martin and FG’s Leo Varadkar were sending each other late night texts over the weekend without actually meeting.

But it seems that everybody is happy again and that simmering tempers have cooled.

Both parties released a terse statement at the exact same time this afternoon.

It reads: “The leaders of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party met for two hours this morning.

“The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to successfully concluding the talks and to negotiating in good faith.

“They reaffirmed that the talks will remain confidential and a running commentary will not be provided to the media from any of the parties on matters being discussed in the talks.

“All parties are working to conclude a draft Programme for Government by the end of the month and for its consideration by each party in accordance with their respective arrangements thereafter.”
