Government eyes spectator cap of 10,000 at large-scale events in Japan

The government on Wednesday decided to ease the restrictions in stages on the number of attendees at mass events in areas where a coronavirus state of emergency or emergency-level priority measures have been lifted. The maximum number will be raised from the current limit of 5,000 people to 10,000.

In areas where a state of emergency or emergency-level priority measures are in place, the attendance limit for large-scale events is set at 50% of capacity or 5,000 people, whichever is fewer.

The cap will stay in place for one month after the state of emergency or the emergency-level priority measures have been lifted. The limitations will be relaxed further if no problems arise.

In areas where a state of emergency is changed to priority measures, the cap of 5,000 people or fewer will be maintained.

The plan to ease restrictions was presented to and approved by a government subcommittee of experts on Wednesday. Yasutoshi Nishimura, the minister in charge of economic revitalization and measures against the novel coronavirus, told reporters after the meeting that the decision does not apply to restrictions on the number of spectators at the upcoming Olympics and Paralympics.

However, the new spectator cap is expected to be applied to the maximum number of spectators at the Tokyo Olympics, which will start on July 23.
