Government extends support for aviation

Government support programs for airlines including cheap tickets have been extended as states deal with new outbreaks of COVID-19 cases.

The half-price flights program is being extended to November 30 for both sales and travel, to ensure travellers impacted by lockdowns or border closures can access tickets and benefit key tourism regions.

As well, the Domestic Aviation Network Support and Regional Airline Network Support programs which were due to end in September will now run until the end of the year.

"Through the COVID-19 crisis, DANS and RANS have allowed more than 1.8 million passengers to continue to travel across our country, including essential workers in health care and other frontline services," Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said on Monday.

It will also support essential freight movement around the country.

The government is also extending a 50 per cent waiver of domestic air services charges for regular public transport and aeromedical flights to December 31.

A number of other programs supporting ground-handling companies, airports, and the aviation workforce will get extra support.
