Government contractor dies in extreme temperatures near Bungle Bungles, Western Australia

A government contractor has died in searing heat in the world-heritage listed Bungle Bungles in Western Australia's far north.

The man died on Saturday after the car he was in broke down within the Purnululu National Park, in the Kimberley region, on Saturday morning.

WA Police say early indications are the two men in the vehicle attempted to walk 30 kilometres to a ranger station, but one — aged in his 20s – deteriorated rapidly and died that day.

It is understood the pair were employed by a Kununurra-based building company contracted to build a new visitors centre at the national park, more than two hours by road north-west of Halls Creek.

Temperatures in the region reached more than 40 degrees on Saturday.

Scorching heat settled across the state's north-west last week and is expected to last for many more days, with the daytime mercury hovering well over 40 degrees in large parts of the Pilbara and Kimberley regions.
